What is Winter Like in Florida
What is Winter Like in Florida
Winter is just around the corner and a lot of people want to know what winter's like in Florida. We have people that are getting ready to move here or planning a trip here and want to know what they are getting themselves into. So, if you want to know what winter is like in Florida, don't you go anywhere because I'm going to give you a little bit information on what is like in the wintertime here in Florida.
Alright. So, what is winter like in Florida?
Well, the biggest difference is that, some of us might actually be wearing pants instead of shorts. And we might even throw on a pair of flip flops instead of sneakers. But then again, that's just a big old maybe. A lot of us are still dressed like it is spring in summertime, but might throw on a little bit of a hoodie and call it a day.
But the average temperature in the winter months in Florida is in the60's. January is considered the coldest month with the average temperature being in the 40's. But the funny thing about that is even though you're starting off a little cold, it can get up to the 70's during the afternoon. So, just make sure you dress accordingly. You might want to wear something to where you can shed a layer or two later on in the day. So, you're just not sweating it out thinking it was going to be cold all day because that won't likely be the case. So, it gets a little funny here between morning and afternoon and the evening times. So, just make sure check the weather channel. I definitely love to check the hourly temperatures for the day, so I know what to expect and how to plan for it. And it still does rain too occasionally. So, you might want to make sure you don't get out get stuck in the cold freezing rain because that can be worse than, you know, the rain in the summertime. That just brings humidity. But cold and rainy weather can be a little bit miserable. So, make sure you check that out too when you plan your day out about.
OCCASIONAL COLD FRONTS
Late to see snow, but you may see some little flurries that probably wouldn't even make it to the ground. And you'll know when it's freezing or when it's about to be freezing, if you're driving through a neighborhood and you see people outside, throwing sheets or blankets or tarps over their bushes or their flower gardens. That's just them trying to protect their gardens and their bushes and try and keep them alive and survive throughout the night in the freezing temperatures.
BEACHES
Now, the beaches, they're not as crowded as they would be, of course, in the summertime. However, you'll still see people out there. There's people that still want to sit out and enjoy the sound of the waves. There are people that still want to go and catch the sunrise and or the sunset. Very few people will actually be in the water. Not me. The temperature needs to at least 80, 85 degrees for me to be comfortable out there in the water. So, when I see people out there in December, January in the water, you know, wet suits or not. I think they're crazy because it's so so freezing. I can't even get my feet in the water. But that's up to, you know, whatever you can tolerate as far as being out there. But, do expect one or two people occasionally out there in the freezing waters. They've been having some areas where they have, I think, it's called like, a polar diver or something where they'll just run out a group of people or run out into the freezing waters. It's just a, you know, a great come together. But, that's something you probably won't ever see me do. I can't tolerate cold cold water like that, but it is fun to watch.
WILDLIFE
Now, wildlife that you'll commonly see in Florida too during the winter months are those beautiful manatees. You'll also see the right whales, which typically spend the summertime off the coast of New Zealand and Nova Scotia and just kind of migrate their way over to Florida during November and December time frame. You'll also see the Horian Eastern Red Bats that heads south during the wintertime. But don't worry, they're not going to come after you. They mostly just eat insects and mosquitoes, so that's good for us or as we like to call them here, skeeters. So, those are just some of the animals you'll see down here during the wintertime. But, yes, during the wintertime in Florida, it's not exactly how some people might think it's going to be, you know, 70, 80 degree temperature throughout the whole time.
Now further south, Florida, it is that is warmer in the wintertime. I do have people ask about that too when they're trying to plan a vacation. Some people do prefer to go to warmer temperatures, so they want to head further south. Maybe Miami or even Southern than that. However, people don't really care about how hot it gets or actually still prefer to be a little bit cool. They do choose the Destin and Miramar Beach in the 30A areas. Still a very beautiful place to visit during the winter months. We do have a lot of snowbirds that come to visit. Some will stay about a month, some will stay up to three months and just, you know, write up the entire winter season here in Florida to get away from those cold winter temperatures that people experience up north of course.
RELOCATE
So, if you are going to relocate to Florida, just know that during the winter months, you might not need those big heavy coats that you're used to during the wintertime. But, you'll still need to bring, you know, or you still need to wear jackets or hoodies, so don't get rid of everything in your wardrobe that involves bundling up. But again, like I mentioned earlier, it still gets warmer during the afternoon times, especially when a sunshine all day. But we do have the colder mornings where you might have to go start your car early to warm it up, defrost your windows. But you don't have to worry about, you know, slippery or the frozen, I'm sorry, frozen roads like you would. When it's maybe snowing or the flurries are out causing ice on the roads, we don't worry about that too much. Maybe on the bridges, it might get a little slippery. However, we don't have to worry about shoveling our driveways or our sidewalks during the winter months. So, that's the one of the best things that us Floridians don't have to deal with here in Florida during the wintertime. Some people actually like that, some people like to deal with what the winter storms bring, the aftermath anyway, playing in the snow making snowman. I mean, I've had my chance to experience that when I was really, really young, but I moved to Florida when I was about eleven years old. So, the only time I saw snow was when I lived in Japan for a few years where it did snow. So, I don't really say that I wish I grew up in a place where it snowed. I do enjoy Florida. I don't like to be too cold or too hot, so I feel like Florida has the perfect climate. So, if you are concerned with how cold or how hot Florida may get, of course, we have tons of information about that for you. We do have other videos too that can go into more detail. But, yes, I just want to generally sum up what winter is like here in Florida.
