What I Dislike About Florida
What I Dislike About Florida
Contemplating a move to the lovely state of Florida? You've probably heard numerous accounts of what people adore about the Sunshine State, but what about the aspects that aren't so appealing? In this article, we'll delve into ten aspects that my team and I personally find less than favorable about living in Florida.
Highway System
Florida's highway system can be quite frustrating. Unlike some states with straightforward, efficient road networks, Florida's layout can be confusing. There are often limited direct routes to your destination due to waterways, marshes, and various geographical challenges. This lack of connectivity can lead to traffic issues, which we'll touch on next.
Traffic
Florida is notorious for its traffic, and it's not just the locals to blame. With the state being a popular tourist destination, the roads often get congested. In certain areas, like Miami, traffic can be exceptionally chaotic, with aggressive driving and long commutes. This is exacerbated by the limited highway options mentioned earlier.
Humidity
Florida's humidity, especially during the summer months, can be challenging. High temperatures combined with high humidity levels can leave you feeling constantly sweaty and uncomfortable. Even during the cooler months, the humidity can make it feel much colder than it actually is.
Limited Major Venues
Florida's major entertainment venues are primarily concentrated in cities like Tampa, Orlando, and Miami. If you enjoy concerts, ballet, or major sports events, you might need to travel some distance, given the lack of large venues in other parts of the state. The highway system and traffic can make these journeys less convenient.
Hurricanes
Florida is no stranger to hurricanes and tropical storms. While building codes and precautions have been put in place, the looming threat of these natural disasters can be stressful. Preparing for hurricanes and dealing with their aftermath can disrupt daily life.
Lack of Distinct Spring and Fall
Florida's spring and fall seasons are fleeting. Rapid temperature shifts are common, making it challenging to experience the gradual transition seen in many northern states. This may be disappointing if you enjoy the distinct beauty and weather of spring and fall.
Flat Terrain
If you're fond of mountains and elevation changes, Florida's flat terrain might disappoint. The state lacks the dramatic landscapes and peaks that you can find in other parts of the country.
Limited Public Transportation
Except for major cities, Florida's public transportation infrastructure is not as extensive as in some other states. Relying on public transit may not be as convenient, leading to a reliance on personal vehicles.
Insurance Costs
Florida's insurance costs, particularly homeowners' insurance, have seen significant increases in recent years. Hurricanes and the risk they pose to the state have caused insurance companies to raise rates. This can add a considerable financial burden for homeowners.
Housing Affordability
Florida's housing market has been on the rise, driven by increased demand, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge in home values and rents has made housing less affordable for many. This trend has caused challenges for those seeking to purchase property.
Despite these drawbacks, many people, including myself, continue to reside in Florida due to its numerous positive attributes. Florida's unique charm may outweigh its downsides for you.
