The Florida Panhandle's Top 6 Things To Do... for Sports Lovers!

Listen up sports fans. The Florida Panhandle may be known for its beaches, but, did you know that we have sporting events for even the sportiest of sports fans? Stay tuned for our top six things to do for sports lovers.

Hi everyone. I'm Megan, the executive assistant at the Whittemore group at exp Realty, which is based right here in the Florida Panhandle. And today, I want to tell you about some awesome sporting events we have right here on the Florida Panhandle.

BASEBALL

First, let's play ball. If you love baseball, you'll love watching the Blue Wahoos. They are a minor league baseball team based out of Pensacola, Florida. They are in the southern league and are a double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. The Blue Wahoos stadium was built in 2012 and is located right on the beautiful Pensacola Bay. Games run from April to September.

ICE HOCKEY

Imagine this, ice hockey in Florida. It sounds crazy, right? Well, it isn't, we have the Pensacola Ice Flyers which are a professional hockey team in the southern professional hockey league. They play at the Pensacola Bay Center, which is located in downtown Pensacola. Games run from October to April.

NASCAR

If you like NASCAR, you're really in for a treat because we have two race tracks in the area. We have the Five Flags Speedway, which opened in 1953 in Pensacola, Florida. It is a paved half mile oval auto racing track. They have various events held throughout the year and it is home to the snowball derby. We also have the Southern Raceway, which is located in Milton Florida and it is a 3/8 of a mile dirt oval with short track racing. According to their Facebook page, there are events most Saturdays from March through April.

LOCAL COLLEGES SPORTING EVENTS & TEAMS

We also have several local colleges that have all kinds of sporting events and teams for you to check out. We have the University of West FloridaPensacola State College, and Pensacola Christian College, which are all in Pensacola. And then we also have Northwest Florida State College in Niceville. So, I won't bore you to death with the very long list of sporting events that they have. If you want a full comprehensive list of events that they have, then I have all of them listed out on our corresponding blog post which I will post a link to in the description below. So, definitely check it out because like I said, they have lots of sports going on in each of those colleges. If you can't tell by my attire, I went to Florida State University. So, I'm a big Seminoles fan and luckily Tallahassee is only about a two-and-a-half to three hour drive from here. So, if you're looking for a fun day trip, you can travel over to Tallahassee for the day and check out all the sporting events at FSU. They have the FSU Flying High Circus, which is one of two colleges in the whole country that actually has a circus. So, it's very cool and definitely worth checking out.

FISHING

Alright, I can't talk about the Florida Panhandle without talking about fishing. I mean, we're on the ocean for goodness sakes. And Destin, Florida is known as the world's luckiest fishing Village. So, if you walk up and down the Destin Marina, you will definitely see fishermen that are cleaning off their caches of the day and Destin is actually home to several fishing tournaments. They have the Destin Fishing RodeoHarborWalk Marina Cobia Tournament, and the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic. Pensacola, Florida also has several fishing tournaments. They have the Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo, the Pensacola Bud Light Fishing Rodeo, the Bill Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo and the Annual Pensacola International Billfish Tournament. So, if you like fishing, we definitely have your fair share of fishing.

GOLF

Last but not least, Golf. The Florida Panhandle has plenty of golf courses. So, I won't bore you to death with all the names of all the golf courses because we might be here all day. But, just know that there are plenty of public and private golf courses all along the Panhandle. So, no matter where you're living or vacationing on the Panhandle, you can find a golf course worth checking out.

Alright! Well, those are our top six things to do on the Florida Panhandle for sports lovers. So, put on your jerseys, grab your fishing poles and get ready to tee off. Okay, maybe not all those things simultaneously, but definitely go check out our local sporting events.
