Is Destin FL Safe from Hurricanes

So, a lot of people would love to relocate to Destin, Florida but they do have a lot of concerns about the hurricanes. So, if you're also worried about what the hurricane season may look like here in the Destin, Florida area, this video will also be for you, so make sure you stick around I'll give you some information.

Alright. So, is Destin Florida is safe from hurricanes? Well, the entire state of Florida is not a hundred percent safe from any hurricanes. Florida is surrounded by water, of course, from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. So, it's easy for Florida to be a target for hurricanes.

Now, Destin is located in the Panhandles of Florida, so it's the northern part of Gulf of Mexico. So, it may not always be at target for storms that are brewing in the Atlantic Ocean. However, these storms can make a shift either east or west or north wherever they want to go. So, even if there isn't a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, it can easily shift west or northwest and head towards the Panhandle where Destin is located. So, you just want to be prepared to be in any of the projected paths for these storms. I don't know if you've seen the projected paths on the news channel before where it just looks like a whole bunch of spaghetti noodles letting us know which direction the storm can go, it can get a little confusing. However, we just want to make sure that we pay attention and see if you're location, especially if you're in Destin, if you're not in the path of that eye of the storm. You definitely want to actually you head out somewhere else where you're saved.

Now even if a hurricane is in the Gulf of Mexico, that doesn't immediately mean that Destin is at the target for the eye of the storm. Doesn't mean it's gonna hit the panhandle. It could either shift east towards the northeastern part of Florida or may shift to the west and head towards Louisiana or Mississippi or even Texas. And then, if that was the case in Destin, we just experienced a lot of rain and lots of strong winds. If you do live in Destin or really any part of Florida, if you want to make sure that you're prepared for these storms anyway, so keep a good stock of supplies that you're going to need non perishable foods. Just so you're not rushing to buy them at the last minute just to go to the store and see that everything that you need is out of stock due to all the other last minute shoppers. So, just make sure during hurricane season which is from June 1st through November 30th, make sure you have which need on hand. You don't have to wait until there is actually a storm headed your way. It's always good to keep these items on hand just so you don't experience the empty shelves at the stores. Some of the supplies that you also want to make sure you have are of course water, canned foods or non perishable foods, items that you can cook on the grill if you don't have electricity. You also want to have the can opener too to open up those can goods in case you lose electricity, you can't use your handy electric can opener. You also want to make sure you have batteries, backup batteries for your cell phones, maybe portable chargers, flashlights. You can have sandbags if you're worried about flooding, you can put sandbags in front of your door and your garage to keep the water from intruding into your home. You can get some plywood or storm shutters to cover up your windows, and also don't forget the toilet paper.

Now, make sure you also subscribe to weather updates, whether you're staying at home and writing out the storm, or if you decide to evacuate. Even if you do evacuate, make sure you prep your home before you leave. Maybe communicate with the neighbor about staying behind and let them know that you're heading out and to please keep an eye on your home, and they can even let you know and keep you updated on any damage that they can physically see that happened to your home and even let you know when it's safe to come back. But then again, you can also subscribe to the weather updates to keep an eye on the local one, so you know what's going on in your area. It could be a lot of debris in the roads that will prevent you from even being able to access your street. But, yeah, just to stay in the know whether you stay home or not, you'll know what going on with the storm if it's the shifting or if it's just going to hover around your area for a while and drop a lots of rain. You just really want to stay updated so you're not just wondering when it's safe to go out and access maybe the damage that may have happened to the property. But in 2021, it was pretty good here in the panhandle. We didn't have any major storms. But then again, you just never know what the following years could bring to us. So, again, just always be prepared. Also, don't forget to gas up to. A lot of people are rushing to do that last minute as well. You want to make sure you have gas if you have any appliances at home that use the gas. You also want to make sure you plan out your route to make sure you know your evacuation route. I remember when I was younger, we were evacuated from hurricane Opal, and we decided to head towards Tallahassee, which is normally about two, two and a half hours from the Destin Fort Walton Beach area. But on that particular date, it took us twelve hours just to get to Tallahassee because everyone and their moms and daddy's and children who are headed towards the same direction. So, if you do plan to evacuate, just make sure you head out a little bit early if you can. That way, you're not stuck in so much traffic of everyone busting a move at the same time.
