Florida’s Forgotten Coast

Florida’s Forgotten Coast

When you think of Florida, you think about all the beautiful beaches and the condos and high-rises, and all the partygoers along the shore. Well, there's actually a little bit more to it and it's what we call Florida's Forgotten Coast. It's in Franklin County located right in the Panhandle and consists of Apalachicola, Alligator Point, Eastpoint, Carrabelle, and St. George Island. So, let's talk a little bit more about these little gems along Florida's Forgotten Coast.

Alright, so Florida's Forgotten Coast. This is located on the Panhandle and it's about an hour, hour and a half east of Panama City Beach, and about the same distance south of Tallahassee. Just really depending on where you're going.

APALACHICOLA

First, let's talk about Apalachicola. That's the mouthfuls, try to say that 5 times really fast. This is a small coastal city that sits right at the mouth of Apalachicola River and features historical buildings and old shrimp boats, great seafood restaurants, and lots of friendly residents. They're very welcoming to visitors. If you like to be outdoors, there are several nature trails and parks for you to visit in Apalachicola. You can also walk through the historic district. So you can see some of the homes of the past River Pilots and Sea Captains. Now, depending on the time of year that you visit Apalachicola, make sure you check out their calendar of events. This may be a small city, but they have big fun. They do have like an annual oyster cook-off art festivals, and of course, seafood festivals. So, make sure you check their calendar of events when you go visit, in that way, you'll be able to catch in on some of the fun that they have out there.

ALLIGATOR POINT

Next, there's Alligator Point and this is located at the easternmost point of Franklin County and has some of the most pure beaches in Florida, with eight miles of unspoiled coastline along the peninsula. The beaches here are very quiet and relaxing and not as crowded and congested as some of the Destin beaches, maybe during peak season or even in Miami beach. But, you can also enjoy kayaking, canoeing, biking, get on the fishing charters and there's so many other outdoor activities that you can enjoy at Alligator Point.

Now, if you love Wildlife, make sure you check out the Bald Point State Park and see the migrating bald eagles during the fall along with monarch butterflies, that are heading south for the winter. And on the ground, you'll have sightings of coyotes, black bears, deer, bobcats and so much more.

CARRABELLE

The third gem on the list is Carrabelle. This is another small friendly destination that's perfect for quiet getaways. You can walk along the great Florida birding trail. Go snorkeling or check out one or all three of the museums that's going to give you the scoop on Carrabelle's history.

ST. GEORGE ISLAND

Now, one of my favorite things about St. George Island is that it's one of the few pet-friendly beaches in Florida. So, this 22-mile barrier island has plenty of space on the beach for visitors and their fur babies. Pets are also allowed in many of the restaurants and stores and the vacation home. So, that's very important for people that are going on vacation. They want to bring their fur babies with them. So, St. George Island is a great place to bring your pets. You can enjoy a number of the same outdoor activities that you can enjoy on the other parts of the coast such as snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc. Lots of water fun to enjoy.

EAST POINT

Last, on the list, there's East Point and this is Franklin County's commercial oyster industry. It's across the bay from Apalachicola and St. George Island. You can visit all the local seafood restaurants that have obviously the freshest seafood. Enjoy your stay at one of the historic fishing lodges or park your RV at one of the two full-service RV parks. Now, if you like some awesome wildlife fun and adventure, visit the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. You'll be able to see what's swimming out there in the Apalachicola River such as fish and shellfish and some reptiles too.

Alright guys, so don't forget about Florida's Forgotten Coast. Make sure you visit this beautiful Coastline at some point and especially if you just want a nice little quiet getaway, some fun out in the water, and just to see little small quaint historic cities. It's very, very nice to visit and get away from the crowd. If you want to know more about this area, feel free to call/text us at 850.320.7757 or email us at Admin@WhittemoreGroupRE.com
