7 Reasons NOT to Move to Destin FL

I'm sure you've heard a lot of great things about relocating to Destin Florida. But maybe you're just not buying into it all. Well, you're not wrong. Not every city is perfect for everybody which is why I'm going to give you seven reasons not to move to Destin, Florida.

Alright, so let's get right into it. Seven reasons not to move to Destin. Now. This is a no particular order.

 1. Tourist

Now, this is more like one of those can't live with them, can't live without them for the locals of Destin. So a lot of people might not really appreciate all the extra people coming into their home space. But then again, it's a great thing for especially the local business owners because not only do they get to service the local residents all year round, but they also get to service a lot of the tourists and visitors that come in town. So it's really just that additional revenue throughout these peak times of the year. And that leads me to number two is the traffic.

2. Traffic

Now, if you're familiar with the Destin area, you may know that Highway 98 is the main road that drives through town. A lot of local residents know of some of the back roads. But if you're not from here, it's easy to get to know and get familiar with the back roads to avoid some of the traffic. Of course, it gets a little worse during the springtime and summertime. A lot of people coming to the area trying to get to the beach. We're trying to get to their hotels and get checked in or go shopping and dining all the fun stuff that Destin has to offer. Everybody's trying to get to those places all at the same time. So just expect to sit in some of that traffic. If you really just can't stand it, just get familiar with some of those back roads.

3. Lots of Activities

There's Lots of activity constantly in Destin. So, if you are more into this small-town feel, nice, peaceful, quiet type of town, Destin might not be the place for you to move to. There's a lot of action going on in Destin. Lots of, not even really just when the tourists are in town, but a lot of the locals like to go out and have a good time as well. There's a lot of shopping options and dining. Lots of festivals that might go on throughout the year. Of course, it's a little different during the pandemic, but there's still a lot of activities going on in Destin everyone's trying to get to. So just expect a lot of activity. Again, if you don't like all that commotion and you like a more peaceful town, Destin might not be right for you.

4. Hurricanes

Now, of course, we are known to encounter a hurricane or two down in the area. But a lot of people think it's a lot worse than what it actually is. They think that because it's hurricane season, we're just going to just stay devastated throughout the whole entire time. But, it's really not that bad as long as you're prepared for it, you know how to handle it especially if you have to evacuate. It can get a little complicated when everyone's trying to leave at the same time, of course, because that's going to lead to a lot of traffic or if you're going to stay and a bunker down at home. A lot of the supplies don't seem to last out in the stores because everyone's trying to get the same items for their survival kits. So it's just thought of experience in hurricanes, kind of freaked out a little bit. You might not want to consider the southern areas of the states because you might encounter a hurricane or two. But just know that, if you are in this area, just be aware of what you need to, all the information that you need to know in order to prepare for a hurricane whether you're going to stay or evacuate.

5. Small Lots Available

There are smaller lots available for purchase out in Destin. And now, if you are looking for a lot of acreages, for instance, I did have clients that were recently in town looking for a nice piece of land because they have horses that they want to bring with them. Couldn't really find that in the Destin area at this time. So we did have to look a little further north towards Crestview. But if you like a lot of land, a lot of acreage on your property will be a little difficult to find that in Destin. Unless you just don't mind just getting a place out on the beach and enjoying a whole lot of White Sands instead of Farmland.

6. Dogs Are Not Allowed on Public Beaches

The dogs are not allowed on public beaches. So, a lot of people have this idea that they're going to pack up and relocate down here and bring their dogs and just going to have a blast up and down the beaches. But that won't necessarily be the case because dogs are not allowed out on public beaches. Now, if you do own a condo out on the beach, there are designated areas for you to bring your pets. But just out and open in general. You won't be allowed to enjoy the waters with your dogs, but there are a couple of dog parks available. I do have a separate video that tells you where all the dog parks are.

7. High Cost of Living

The cost of living is a bit higher in Destin. Now, if you are looking to purchase property, the cost is a little bit higher in that general location because of it being Destin. And if you're looking to rent instead, the monthly rent will be a little bit higher in Destin and your food and groceries. All that's going to be a little bit higher in price. But that is just a small price to pay in order to live in such a fantastic area. If you want to know more about the cost of living in Destin, I do have another video for that. So check it out.
