10 Things You Don't Know About Living in Crestview Florida
So if you're thinking about moving here to the Destin-Fort Walton Beach area, and you're thinking Crestview might be the place for you. Well, my team and I have put together the top 10 things that you might not know about Crestview.
All right, so let's get into it. We got the top 10 things you may not know about Crestview.
And number one is Crestview actually, we used to be called the Hub City. Yeah, it was called the Hub City because everything converged here at one point. It had Interstate 10, Highway 85, Highway 90. We also the Florida Gulf and Atlantic Railroad that used to go right through there. And of course, you have the Yellow River and the Shoal River that also converged around that same time.
number two was Crestview became the seat in Okaloosa County back in 1917, that was April 1917. It actually won over Baker with 85 votes. Pretty cool, huh?
All right, and number three is Crestview's actually got the oldest business that's still operating, which is the Mack Brothers' Barbershop, which actually is still on Main Street, which originally opened back in 1917 at the same location as Kiehl's Barbershop.
Then we have number four, which Crestview is actually home to the first factory in Okaloosa County. It was first industry to offer employment to women as well. The Smith Johnson Garment Factory, later known as Alatex, opened back in 1937 and referred to as Crestview's new city hall. And it was mainly because on the first floor, right in the corner, most of the government offices were located there, so that's what it was. Today, it's actually one of the places for the Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy. So some history there.
All right and number five. Crestview, was at times declared "off limits" to airmen from Eglin Field back in the 1940s and '50s due to numerous accounts in gambling establishments and liquor incidents, which were perceived as being able to take advantage of young airmen. Imagine that.
Number six, Crestview actually boasted the first hospital in Okaloosa County. Yeah, it's the one and only between Marianna and Pensacola. It was Dr. Enzor and his brother, they built up the Enzor Brothers Hospital back in 1926. It was actually off of Highway 90 West and it's actually a former site of the Savage Turpentine Still, which is currently a site of the Beall's Outlet and Day's Tires.
Number seven, "ommitted"
Number eight, did you know that Crestview actually has the biggest Chick-fil-A in Okaloosa County? That's 5,406 square feet of deliciousness six days a week. Yeah. I have fallen short, not knowing it was Sunday and definitely went there going, "Hey, I'm the only one in line." Nope. All right.
Number nine is the heaviest traffic in the Crestview area off of highway 85 is actually around 3 to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday. Now, if you live in the Crestview area, you already know this, but if you're thinking about moving, that's something to keep in mind.
The last one we got is number 10. Crestview was actually known as the "ice box" of Florida due to having the coldest winters in the entire state of Florida. That's as low as 26 degrees anytime between December and February. So if you're down there and destined for Walton Beach, you're going to be a little bit warmer than you're going to be up in Crestview. Just keep that in mind and keep your heavy sweaters.
All right. That's all that we have for you for the 10 things you might not know about Crestview. If you've got something that you know about Crestview that's of course, worthy to put in this video.
